Kensington's next soccer leaders step up

For young people in school there aren’t many things more important than playing sport with your friends, and for the local boys living in Kensington it ranks supreme.

For over six years the Kensington Community Recreation Centre has been home to Friday night soccer for around 30 - 40 local boys keen for a kick of the soccer ball. During that time the Centre has seen many different participants rise up and take charge of the large group.

Now it’s Ahmed Geyre turn. After participating in the program for many years, Ahmed has now been employed by the Centre to run the sessions every week.

“The program is the highlight of the week for these boys,” says Ahmed. “We get guys here from grade 4 right up to year 10, and they all love it.”

What started as a program to get the local kids involved in a productive after school activity has blossomed into a program that is the bedrock for these local young people.

“It is nice to think we can guide them to do the right thing and it is good to see most of them following in our footsteps,” says Ahmed.

Another prominent name in the program is Sahnun Shakur. Sahnun now Lifeguards at the Centre but still makes sure he is available for Friday Soccer.

Both Ahmed and Sahnun agree that this program is a great opportunity for the older boys to guide and mentor the younger participants.

“We all grew up in the area and have been coming to play soccer ever since it started,” says Sahnun. “Back then there were older guys that used to run the sessions, but they have since moved on. Now it’s our turn to step up and lead.”
